Human Being: COVID-19

Human Being: COVID-19

At an extremely crucial moment of human history,
To share the story of the future with people all over the world.

In May 2020, Gallery Nomart planned a 3rd solo exhibition by Taiwanese artist Chang Teng-Yuan.
But the artist cannot come to Japan. The gallery, which has been temporarily closed due to the declaration of emergency, cannot invite people. The originally planned solo exhibition will be postponed to next year.
However, there should be something that can be done at this time of year!
In consultation with Chang, we have decided to hold an exhibition with the theme of this situation.

The exhibition name is "Human Being: COVID-19". This website is an attempt to share themes with people all over the world and imagine and create new steps.
Chang has created a new video with COVID-19 as a motif. This website publishes only sketches, which are fragments of stories (videos). There are many choices for the sketch, and depending on how you choose it, 243 stories will be born. Please imagine a story freely based on his sketch and get your own story. The story (video) you selected can be viewed for the first time by playing the video data (USB memory) in the can that is sent after purchase. No one is the same; your own story begins here.

*During the exhibition, 243 stories (videos) are projected randomly on the walls of the unattended gallery.

About These Colorful Mud

It was a million years after Doomsday when Parrotman arrived on Earth. There was only silence on Earth. Things were covered not with ashes, but rather with a kind of enigmatic colorful mud. Archaeological survey is Parrotman’s specialty and Sealman, those who followed Parrotman, also immediately immersed themselves in this investigation. They soon realized that Earth met its destruction after a series of major events and that these events turned various living organisms on Earth into mud that came in different colors.

As the archaeological survey processed, Parrotman excavated more and more Earth artifacts and literatures. Parrotman used these literatures to learn how to use the artifacts that they had excavated. For example, they found out that the item named “cup” was an accessory to put on their head, the item named “piano” was a message terminal, and the item named “nuclear warhead” was a good item to wipe life out. Although it was easy to know how to use these artifacts, the human being, this once intelligent creature of Earth, had many kinds of behavior that Parrotman could not conceive of.

Then Parrotman started to imitate human behavior. In the course of imitating it, they not only established file archives, but also tried to understand the meaning behind all those behaviors. They started to learn how to set fireworks, queue, have afternoon tea, play slides, do graffiti, protest, have parades, breed other species, and so on.

The research purpose of Parrotman was to understand why humans caused their own destruction and eventually turn into mud. Their way of doing so was to repeat what the humans had done, to experience the choices they had to make in the crucial moments and to understand the circumstances that the humans were faced with.

They had bred nearly 60% of the species there were on Earth when humans last existed. Species such as bats, bulls, pigs, lambs, fish and others were bred with Parrotman’s understanding. At the same time, however, they realized that something interesting was happening: the circumstances were getting out of control.

The repulsion between species was something they had expected. Still, hybrids that were bred due to numerous unknown factors and unexpected new viruses that were produced along with these hybrids made things out of control. Parrotman has successfully made Earth approach its new doomsday according to the blueprint stipulated by humans and was approaching the crucial point of destruction. What was the key in turning all species into colorful mud? Parrotman believed that they would eventually find the reason for it if they keep on imitating human history.

About this Exhibition “Human Being: COVID-19”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, artists could not attend the exhibition venue in person. Works that were planned to be exhibited were disrupted due to this unexpected great happening. I believe that this is an extremely crucial moment of human history. Therefore, as an artist, I believe that it is necessary for me to record this moment down in my own fashion.

This exhibition is a programmatic exhibition. To viewers, it is like a preview to an exhibition. For those in the future looking back on records about this exhibition, it is a short fable story. For me, it is an anchor of the time presented in the form of inspirational fragments.

The form of this exhibition is really simple. I put my thoughts on 2020 (the crucial year of human history) into the plot development of Parrotman and made it into a story. There are 5 chapters, and I considered 3 types of development. Only sketches that suggest it will be published on the website. Viewers can select / purchase a story based on artist's sketches in their own way and get their own story (video data) enclosed in a can.Viewers can then connect them into a story of 2020 on their own by choosing the story they prefer.
The artist could not come. And in the unattended gallery, all the stories that anyone would choose will be played randomly.

HUMAN BEING- COVID-19
