水中に沈めたオブジェを撮影した代表作「pool」シリーズ。
今回“光”を新たなテーマに据えて、深化した新作展を開催
日常的な視点から捉えたごく些細なズレや錯覚を、写真・版画・映像など多様なメディアを介して作品へと昇華する現代美術作家・田中朝子。その視点はユーモラス、作品は透明感、軽やかさがありながら、根底では人の認識の多様性や画一的でない世界の有様を鑑賞者に提示します。
3年振りの個展となる今展では、2007年の個展(＊)に合わせて制作を開始、のちに田中の代表作の1つとして数えられる作品「pool」シリーズに再度脚光をあてた新作を発表いたします。
「pool」シリーズは主に日常の中で目にする様々なオブジェを水中に沈めて撮影した写真作品です。光の屈折によって実在感が曖昧となったそれらオブジェは、重力や実用といった本来の意味から解放され、純粋な視覚体験としてのイメージが提示されます。また、“見る”環境や行為自体も作品化する田中は、2007年の「pool」展では広いギャラリーの床を一面、白いタイル張りとして、来廊者をひととき水際の空間への誘いました。
「light in a pool」と題された今展では、“水”をテーマに考察を深めた結果導き出された“光”の性質に着目。水を使って光を捉え、その光と視覚によって認識される様々な色やカタチを、田中独自の手法で作品へと昇華させます。
多様な手法によって繊細に、また大胆な発想で、時にユーモアを織り込みながら世界の普遍性や多様性を私たちに提示する作家・田中朝子の新作展。

light in a pool
「light in a pool」とは、2007年にギャラリーノマルで開催した「pool」展の続編の様なものです。
「pool」展では紅茶（“tea in a pool”）やホース（“hose in a pool”）などの日用品を水に沈め、写真作品にして展示しました。
ある日のまだ明るい時間、お風呂に入っていてフト、お湯に浸かった自分の手が普段より白けて見えたのがきっかけでした。感覚的には「白けて」だったのですが、回想すれば、水の中では水の外より、発色が大人しく儚げで物理的だけでない浮遊感が感じられたのです。どうやら水のフィルターによって、実在感を失い抜け殻の様になるのです。そんな気づきから、嬉々としてあれこれトプンと水に沈めては写真にしました。
当然ながら、展覧会が終わったからと言って興味が無くなる訳ではなく、その後も相変わらずお風呂の中では手を眺め、ラッキョウの瓶詰めに見入り、時に水が残ったグラスの底から空を見上げたりする日々が日常として淡々と続きました。
そしてそんなまたある日の陽の昇る頃、「虹を沈めてみたい」と唱えながら目覚めてしまい、「pool」モードの日々が再び始まりました。
寝ぼけた思いをどこまで形にできるかは別として、再び始めて気づいたのには、水の現象として思って追究していたものが、それは光の現象でもあること、私が無性に惹かれる透明感や浮遊感、揺らぎなどは光あってのものなんだと、今更ながら認識し、光に敬意を込めて今回は「light in a pool」と掲げることにしました。
光に満ちたpoolの空間を、ご一緒に楽しんでいただけたら幸いです。

The representative work series “pool”, taking the pictures of objects soaking into the water.
Focusing on the theme of “light” this time, the exhibition of new works will be launched.
Asako Tanaka is a comtemporary artist who captures the extremely trivial illusions and laps happening in the everyday life to create artworks by means of the various medium, such as photography, print and movie. Her perspective is humorous, and the works she created with a sense of transparency and lightness are showing to audience a multifaceted world that rooted in the deep of our cognition.
In the first solo exhibition in three years, we are going to refocus on her series of works “pool” and announce the new works, of which the producing started for her solo exhibition in 2007, and be counted as one of the most representative works by Tanaka.
“pool” is a series of photographs of the various daily objects soaked into the water. The objects of which the sense of existence becomes ambiguous by the function of optical refraction, were free from their meanings in physics and practicality and presented merely as the images of a type of visual experience. To turn the circumstances for “seeing” and the behavior itself to artworks, Tanaka laid the white tiles on the entire floor of the gallery on the exhibition in 2007, which invited visitors to experience the fancy moment in a space of the side of water.
Under the title of “light in the pool”, the exhibition this time will be focusing on the nature of “light” this time. Using water to catch the light, the colors and shapes that were perceived by the light and our eyes, are transformed as art by Tanaka’s unique approach.
This is an exhibition of new works by Asako Tanaka, an artist who uses a variety of techniques to present the universality and the diversity of the world to us in a subtle way and with bold ideas, sometimes interwoven with humor.

light in a pool
"light in a pool“ is a sequel of the exhibition “pool” held at Gallery Nomart in 2007.
In the exhibition of “pool”, I exhibited the photographs of everyday objects such as tea（“tea in a pool”）and hoses (“hose in a pool”)soaked in water.
One day, when the day was still light, I was taking a bath, and I saw that my hands, soaked in the hot water, looked whiter than usual. That inspired me.
The sensation was “white", but if I recall, the color was more mature and fragile in the water than out of the water, and there was a sense of floating that was not only physical.
Apparently, the water filter makes an object lose its reality and become a shell of itself. With this realization, I was excited and soaked many things in the water to take pictures.
Of course I was not just making works for exhibitions, I spent my days blandly by looking at my hands when I take a bath, staring at bottled scallions, and looking up the sky from the bottom of a glass bottle with a little water left inside.
And one day as the sun was rising again, I woke up with saying “I want to soak the rainbow in the water”, and the days of “pool” mode began again.
I don't know how far I can go in shaping the idea generated from the time when I was half-asleep, but what I start to realize again is what I pursued for such a long time by thinking it as a phenomenon of water is also a phenomenon of light. That sense of transparency, floating, and shimmering that I'm irresistibly attracted to is because of the light. By realizing it, in honor of the light, I decided to title the exhibition as "light in a pool" this time.
I hope we could enjoy the light-filled pool space together.
