全国の美術館で大規模な展覧会を続ける気鋭美術作家・飯川雄大、
ギャラリーノマルでの初個展

神戸在住の現代美術作家、飯川雄大はこの2-3年だけでも、霧島アートの森(鹿児島 / 2023年)、彫刻の森美術館(神奈川 / 2022年)、兵庫県立美術館(兵庫 / 2022年)、千葉市美術館つくりかけラボ(千葉 / 2021年)などで個展を開催。グループ展も同様に2022年の国立国際美術館での展覧会やヨコハマトリエンナーレ2020などでの大規模な展示・インスタレーションが記憶に新しい、まさに旬の作家です。

飯川は人の認識の不確かさや社会の中で見逃されがちな事象に注目し、鑑賞者に気づきや能動的な反応を促すような映像、写真、インスタレーションを制作しています。特に2007年からは今展でのタイトルにもなっている「デコレータークラブ (DECORATOR CRAB)」シリーズの制作を開始。海にいる擬態する蟹の名前に由来するこのシリーズでは、作品と鑑賞者との関係をこの蟹の生態になぞらえ、鑑賞者の行為によって起きる偶然をポジティブにとらえ、思考を誘発する、能動的な作品を展開しています。

コマーシャルギャラリーでの個展としては10年ぶり以上となる今回の個展では、一見遊んでいるようにも思える鑑賞者の行為を基軸にした新作インスタレーションや、個人所有が可能な新作の立体作品やドローイング、新作版画などを発表予定。ノマルならではの空間を最大限に利用した、ユニークな展覧会となります。どうぞご期待ください。

作家コメント

　 2017年の国立国際美術館で開催されたミュージアムパーティ（作家が作品とか興味あることを話す会）でたくさんの人の前で「デコレータークラブ」の話をする機会があった。その時の会場の反応は、みんなキョトンとしていた。何日か経って、ノマルの林さんだけは「おもろい」と言ってたらしいよというのを知って嬉しかった。

2018年の尼崎A-LABで開催した個展「デコレータークラブ 配置・調整・周遊」の会場で林さんが「まだ誰もデコレータークラブのこと分かってないけど、いつかみんなが君がやろうとしてることを理解して期待して作品を観に来る時がくる、その時に作家は何をするかだね」と言ってくれたことがあった。その言葉はずっと大切にしていて、作品を一歩前に進めるタイミングってあると思うし、想像できたり期待されることを利用して、情報や体験が加わることで成立する表現もある。

今回の展示は、2023年の霧島アートの森で発表した《PULLING TIME》を発展させたインスタレーションと新しいドローイング、鑑賞者が自ら重いバッグを展示空間の外に持ち出し、別の展示会場へ運ぶ《新しい観客》を展示します。ぜひ観にきてほしいです。

Takehiro Iikawa, a Rising Contemporary Artist with Major Exhibitions Nationwide, Presents His First Solo Show at Gallery Nomart

Based in Kobe, contemporary artist Takehiro Iikawa has held solo exhibitions at prominent art venues in the past 2-3 years, including Kirishima Open-Air Museum (Kagoshima / 2023), The Hakone Open-Air Museum (Kanagawa / 2022), Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (Hyogo / 2022), and Chiba City Museum of Art – Tsukuritake Lab (Chiba / 2021). He has also participated in large-scale group exhibitions such as the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2022) and Yokohama Triennale 2020, where his installations left a lasting impression.

Takehiro Iikawa focuses on the uncertainties of human perception and the overlooked phenomena within society. Through his work in video, photography, and installations, he encourages viewers to become more aware and to engage actively with the art.

Since 2007, he has been developing the "Decorator Crab"series, which also serves as the title for this exhibition. Named after a species of crab that camouflages in the ocean, this series draws parallels between the relationship between the artwork and the viewer and the behavior of the crab. In his pieces, Iikawa embraces the accidental outcomes triggered by the viewer's actions, positioning these moments as positive and thought-provoking, creating active and participatory experiences for those who engage with his art.

This solo exhibition marks over 10 years since Ikawa's last solo show at a commercial gallery. For this exhibition, he will present new installation works that center around the seemingly playful actions of viewers, as well as new sculptures, drawings, and prints that can be privately owned. The exhibition will be a unique experience, maximizing the space of Nomart to create an environment where the audience can engage with the artwork in an interactive and thoughtful way. Artist's Comment

In 2017, at the National Musem of Art, Osaka, I had the opportunity to speak about my "Decorator Crab" series during a museum party (a gathering where artists discuss their works and interests) in front of many people. The reaction in the room was a bit confused, and everyone seemed puzzled. A few days later, I heard that only Satoshi Hayashi from Nomart had said, "It’s interesting," and I was really happy to hear that.

In my 2018 solo exhibition "Decorator Club: Arrangement, Adjustment, and Circulation" at A-LAB (Amagasaki), Hayashi said to me, "No one understands Decorator Club yet, but there will come a time when everyone will understand what you're trying to do, and they'll come expecting something. The question will be, what will the artist do then?" Those words have always stayed with me. I believe there are moments when it’s time to move a piece of work forward. Sometimes, by leveraging what can be imagined or what people expect, and adding layers of information and experience, a new form of expression can come to life.

This exhibition will feature an installation that expands upon my piece "PULLING TIME" presented at the Kirishima Open-Air Museum in 2023, along with new drawings. Additionally, I will be presenting "New Audience", where visitors themselves are invited to take a heavy bag out of the exhibition space and carry it to a different venue.
