謎に満ちたユーモアと脱力感、何気ない「身の丈」の日常への愛ある眼差し ー
90年代より独自の境地をひた走る画家・栗田咲子、ギャラリーノマルでの初個展

脱力した動物の横には金魚やお寿司が宙を舞い、上弦の月と三日月が同時に空に浮かぶシュールで突拍子のない組み合わせ。栗田咲子の描く絵の多くは、素朴な日常の風景の中に時空を超越した動植物ほか様々なモチーフを画面上に配置し、大胆な省略とダイナミックな構図、そして豊かな色彩で構成されています。また、画中の登場人物たちは穏やかに描かれながらも皆今にも一斉に動き出しそうな独特の緊張感と躍動感を孕んでいます。
一見すると、トンチンカン、捉えどころのないように見えるその不思議な絵は、しかしその繊細で緻密な描画力、自由で想像力を喚起させる構成が、鑑賞者個々人の記憶を揺さぶり心地よいインパクトとともにこれまで多くの人を魅了してきました。

栗田咲子は1990年代に京都市立芸術大学で学び、同年代半ば頃より現在に至るまで関西を中心に絵画作品の発表を続けています。初期には身近な人物をモチーフに多くの作品を制作、2000年代前後からは日常的な光景の中に動植物をコラージュする作風へと変遷してきました。また近年はこれまでのコラージュの要素を抑え、色彩の豊かさと大胆な画面構成によるストレートな風景画にも取り組んでいます。

Private Zoo
栗田作品の特徴の1つは画中に多く登場する動植物。彼女が今も折に触れて頻繁に足を向ける動植物園や公園、水族館で見た生き物たちが、生き生きとした姿そのままに描かれています。2024年、彼女の絵をノマルディレクター・故 林聡がウェブ上で偶然に見かけたことから急転直下、関係者の好意もいただき今回の個展に繋がりました。そこで林から栗田へ“動物や植物の私的コレクション”を意図して提案したタイトルが「Private Zoo」。蒜山ミュージアムでの大規模な個展と前後し、しばらく動植物と向き合える時間を取れていなかった栗田にとってはピッタリなお題目でした。今展では栗田の目に止まった愛すべき生き物たちが一堂に会する、「栗田的動物園」となるでしょう。

初挑戦、タブレット画
タイトルと合わせて栗田に当初より投げかけたお題が、タブレットを用いた作品の制作。ペンツールでタブレットに絵を描くことは初めての栗田。ゼロからのスタートとなる試みでしたが、トライアンドエラーを繰り返しながら手探りの中でも着実に進行中。栗田画の魅力とタブレットを使用することの利点を上手くミックスさせた、新たな作品シリーズが生み出されるか？楽しみにお待ちください。

Private Zoo

私にとって絵は、私的に楽しみたいものであり、私的な拠り所としたいものです。

私の周りで起こる出来事をぼんやり眺めたり、つぶさに観察したり、いろいろな見方を楽しみながら
私の楽園に連れて行けるものはないか、それなりに真剣に探します。

動物が好き、人が好き、山川草木の表情が好き。
楽しく苦しく必死に生きる世界の姿が愛おしい。
そのような純粋な気持を形にできたら嬉しいです。

"A sense of humor shrouded in mystery, a relaxed atmosphere, and a loving gaze toward the unassuming, everyday life —
Since the 1990s, painter Sakiko Kurita has been forging her own unique path. Her first solo exhibition at Gallery Nomart."

Beside the relaxed animals, goldfish and sushi float in midair, while a waxing moon and a crescent moon appear in the sky at the same time—a surreal and unexpected combination.
Many of Sakiko Kurita's paintings depict timeless creatures and various motifs placed within simple, everyday landscapes, transcending space and time. Her works are characterized by bold omissions, dynamic compositions, and rich colors. The figures in her paintings, while depicted in a calm manner, seem to carry a unique tension and vibrancy, as if they are about to move all at once.
At first glance, her mysterious paintings may appear nonsensical or elusive. However, their delicate and meticulous rendering, combined with a free and imaginative composition, has captivated many over the years by stirring personal memories and leaving a pleasantly striking impression.

Sakiko Kurita studied at Kyoto City University of Arts in the 1990s and has been actively presenting her paintings, primarily in the Kansai region, since the mid-'90s.
In her early years, she created many works featuring familiar people as motifs. Around the late 1990s to early 2000s, her style evolved into one that incorporated animals and plants into everyday scenes in a collage-like manner. In recent years, she has shifted away from heavy collage elements, instead focusing on vibrant colors and bold compositions to create more direct landscape paintings.

Private Zoo
One of the defining features of Sakiko Kurita’s work is the frequent appearance of animals and plants. The creatures she observes at zoos, parks, and aquariums—places she still visits regularly—are vividly depicted in her paintings, capturing their lively essence.
In 2024, a chance encounter with Kurita’s artwork online by the late Satoshi Hayashi, director of Nomart, led to an unexpected turn of events. With the support of those around them, this discovery swiftly paved the way for her solo exhibition. It was Hayashi who proposed the title Private Zoo, envisioning it as a personal collection of animals and plants within her art.
Having recently held a large-scale solo exhibition at the Hiruzen Museum, Kurita had not had much time to focus on animals and plants. Thus, this theme felt like a perfect fit. This exhibition will serve as a “Kurita-style zoo,” bringing together the beloved creatures that have caught her eye.

First Challenge: Tablet Art
Along with the exhibition title, another challenge presented to Sakiko Kurita was the creation of works using a tablet. This marks her first experience drawing digitally with a pen tool.

Starting completely from scratch, she has been navigating the process through trial and error. Despite the uncertainties, she continues to make steady progress, exploring how to merge the essence of her painting style with the advantages of digital tools. Will this lead to an exciting new series? Stay tuned to find out.

Private Zoo

For me, painting is something I want to enjoy privately, a personal sanctuary.

I spend my time either gazing absentmindedly or observing keenly the events that unfold around me, enjoying different perspectives while seriously searching for something I can bring into my own paradise.

I love animals, I love people, and I love the expressions of mountains, rivers, trees, and plants.
I cherish the sight of a world that lives with joy, struggle, and determination.
If I can capture that pure feeling in my work, it would make me truly happy.
