異端の作家・池上恵一のギャラリーノマル初個展！
美術界の“コリ”をほぐす、漆黒の宇宙

池上恵一は、身体とその内側にある圧力や「凝り」をテーマとした、独自の作品を一貫して発表し続けてきた作家です。
幼少期に病弱だった池上は、健康への関心を深める中で、さまざまな手技療法や武術を習得しました。父の旅立ちの際に触れた感覚は、彼の創作活動の原動力となっています。他者の身体に触れて感じ取ったエネルギーは、手指で描く木炭ドローイングや彫塑に落とし込まれ、さらにパフォーマンスや舞台美術への参加、ワークショップの開催など、ジャンルを超えた多岐にわたる活動/表現へと展開されてきました。

従来のアートの枠や文脈には収まりきらない唯一無二の道を歩み続ける池上は、岡本太郎現代芸術賞特別賞の受賞をはじめ、海外での作品発表でも高い評価を受けています。近年は、作家としての表現の純度・強度をさらに深めたアプローチで注目を集めています。

2024年2月、ノマル前ディレクター・林聡（11月に急逝）が約20年ぶりに池上と再会。特異にして一貫した池上の作家性は林の心を鷲掴みにし、すぐに初の版画集「生命掌（せいめいしょう）」をノマルの版画工房で出版。続いて個展「Prayer」決定と、2024年の2月〜10月末まで、池上とノマルは対話を重ね、実に濃密な関係を築き上げました。
そんなノマルとのコラボレーションで生まれた「Prayer」シリーズは、ガネーシャ、シーサー、日本刀といった精神の深層を象徴するモティーフを礎に、池上が手や指で漆黒のアウラを塗り込めた木炭ドローイング作品です。

本展では、その「Prayer」シリーズと立体作品を中心に、池上の全人生＝作家人生を空間全体に表出させるインスタレーションを発表します。黒の濃淡に囲まれた空間で、触れること、感じること、そして祈ることを通じて、生の繋がりに迫ろうとする池上の比類なき表現のエネルギーを感じていただければ幸いです。

また、会期初日には、互いに同志と認め合う美術作家・稲垣元則とのトークショーを開催します。二人の対話を通じて、池上作品への理解が一層深まることでしょう。
さらに最終日には、前ディレクター林と共に池上と交流を深めてきたピアニストsara(現ディレクター・今中規子)が、池上の作品世界と共振する音楽ライブを行います。

[作家コメント]

凝りとは何だろう。

幼いころ、私はよく体調を崩していた。
そんな私を、両親は食養法と思想で支えてくれた。
その経験を通じて、私は病気やストレス、そして「凝り」について考え続けてきた。

元気なときと、そうでないとき。
その違いは、身体の内側の圧力や呼吸のあり方にあるのかもしれない。
親族が旅立つ前、私はその変化を肌で感じた。
それ以来、指圧を通して手で感じたものを、再び手を使ってデッサンに落とし込み、
さらに彫塑へと展開させている。

「生きている」というより、「生かされている」。
生命の力と「凝り」は、いつもセットになっていて、日々あふれ出しているように思う。
私は、その働きをかたちにしたい。

今展「祈り」について

誰かに触れるとき、私は祈るような気持ちで手を動かしている。
ただ“凝り”をほぐすためではない。
私は生命の力とともに生まれるかたちをすくい出し、描くことができるー
それは、喜びと感謝を込めた、祈りでもある。

私という個人を超えた存在が息づくとき、祈りは芸術作品となる。

[個展に寄せて]

活力と憂いの中にある池上恵一の作品には、近いとか遠いなどという距離はない。
それは常に私たちに触れている。
触れることが伝えるのは、あたたかく柔らかいこと。そしてつめたく硬くなること。それは強い実存を伝えるとともに喪失という運命も伝える。
人生のさまざまな道のりを経てこその厳しく冷徹な眼差しで向き合う彼の態度は、扱うにはとても難しい言葉ではあるけれども、彼の底のない優しさだと言っていいと思う。

The Maverick Artist Keiichi Ikegami’s First Solo Exhibition at Gallery Nomart!
A Jet-Black Universe that Eases the “Tension” of the Art World.

Keiichi Ikegami is an artist who has consistently presented unique works centered around the themes of the body, internal pressure, and "tension."
Having been a frail child, Ikegami developed a deep interest in health, leading him to master various manual therapies and martial arts. The sensation he experienced while bidding farewell to his father became a driving force in his artistic pursuits. The energy he perceives through touching others' bodies is channeled into his charcoal drawings and sculptures, and further extends to performances, stage designs, and workshops, showcasing his wide-ranging creative expression beyond conventional genres.

Unbound by traditional artistic frameworks, Ikegami has carved out an unparalleled path, receiving high acclaim both domestically and internationally, including the Special Award at the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art. In recent years, he has attracted further attention with a deepened and intensified artistic approach.

In February 2024, the late former Nomart director Satoshi Hayashi (who passed away suddenly in November) reunited with Ikegami after nearly 20 years. Struck by Ikegami's distinct and consistent artistic spirit, Hayashi immediately initiated the publication of Ikegami's first print collection, "Seimeisho (Life in the Palm)”, through Nomart's print workshop. This was soon followed by the decision to hold the solo exhibition "Prayer." From February to the end of October 2024, Ikegami and Nomart engaged in a profound and ongoing dialogue, fostering a close and meaningful collaboration.
The "Prayer" series, born from this partnership, features charcoal drawings in which Ikegami applies a jet-black aura using his hands and fingers. Inspired by motifs symbolizing the depths of the human spirit, including Ganesha, Shisa, and Japanese swords, these works evoke a powerful sense of spirituality.

This exhibition will present the "Prayer" series along with sculptural works, will present an installation that expresses his entire life and artistic journey throughout the space. Enveloped in varying shades of black, visitors will be invited to experience the profound energy of Ikegami's expression through the acts of touching, feeling, and praying, ultimately drawing closer to the connections that define existence.

On the opening day, a talk show will be held with Ikegami and fellow artist Motonori Inagaki, a kindred spirit who shares mutual respect with Ikegami. This dialogue will offer deeper insight into Ikegami's work.

[Artist's comment]

What Is "Tension"?

When I was young, I often fell ill.
My parents supported me with dietary therapy and philosophical guidance.
Through that experience, I have continued to contemplate illness, stress, and the concept of "tension."

The difference between feeling well and unwell
might lie in the internal pressures of the body and the nature of breathing.
Before my relative passed away, I keenly sensed a shift in their being.
Since then, I have captured what I feel through acupressure with my hands,
and translated it into charcoal drawings, further expanding it into sculptures.

Rather than saying "I am living," I feel more like "I am being kept alive."
Life's force and "tension" always seem intertwined, overflowing within me every day.
I wish to give shape to that force.

About This Exhibition, "Prayer"

When I touch someone, I move my hands with a feeling as if in prayer.
It's not merely to relieve "tension."
I believe I can capture and draw the forms that emerge along with life's energy.
This act of creation is also a prayer—one filled with joy and gratitude.

When a presence beyond myself breathes life into my work, that prayer transforms into an artistic expression.

[Contribution to this exhibition]

In Keiichi Ikegami's works, brimming with both vitality and melancholy, there is no concept of near or far.
They are always in contact with us.
What this touch conveys is warmth and softness. Yet, it also speaks of coldness and rigidity. It expresses the intensity of existence while also revealing the inevitable fate of loss.
His attitude—shaped by the many paths of his life—is marked by a gaze of severe, unflinching clarity. Though it may be difficult to express in words, I believe it is best described as a bottomless kindness that resides within him.
