独自の世界観で国際的に注目を集める作家、CHANG Tengyuan
“Cute”な顔たちが問いかける現代の知覚と社会
作品に登場するキャラクター「Parrotman」は、人類滅亡後の未来の地球で、かつての文明を調査するエイリアンです。人間の行動を模倣することはできても、その感情や意味までは理解できない“オウム”たち。遠い未来から現代の人間を研究する彼らの振る舞いを通して、私たちは現代社会を俯瞰的に捉え直し、あらためて思考することになります。
こうした作品で注目を集める台湾出身の若手アーティスト、CHANG Tengyuan（張騰遠 チャン テンユァン）は、台湾国内の公立美術館での大規模個展や、台湾代表としての海外展示などを通じて、着実に国際的評価を高めてきました。今後さらなる飛躍が期待される注目の作家です。
ノマルの前回展「Multiplication」では、「増殖」という現象によってカオスを生み出し、大きな反響を呼びました。本展は、それから3年ぶり、6度目となる個展です。
ノマルとの新たな実験
本展のタイトルは「Everything Has A Cute Face」。「万物に魂が宿る」という日本に馴染み深い考え方にも通じています。これまでもポップな作風を通して東洋思想を表現してきたチャンですが、本展では、AIによってあらゆる情報が双方向化し、自他の境界が曖昧になった日常を現代的な知覚環境として捉え、平面作品や立体作品による空間インスタレーションへと展開します。
焦点となるのは、「見る／見られる」という関係の揺らぎです。展示空間内のあらゆる場所にパロットマンの「目」が出現し、来場者はその状況を体感することになります。
今回のノマルとのコラボレーションでは、この「目」を特別なエディション版画作品として発表します。2015年の初個展以来、ノマルとチャンは対話を重ね、実験的な作品を生み出し続けてきました。その新たな展開にご期待ください。
また、会期初日には、小鼓方の久田舜一郎を迎えたライブパフォーマンスを開催します。伝統芸能とチャンの世界が共鳴することで生まれる化学反応も見どころのひとつです。
チャンが2026年に提示する、“Cute”な顔をしたアニミズムからの現代社会への問いかけ。ぜひ会場でご体感ください。

Everything Has A Cute Face
このタイトルは、東京を旅していたときに出会った外国人観光客が何気なく口にした言葉に由来しています。街のあちこちにあるさまざまなマスコットを見ながら、彼は笑いながらそう言いました。そしてそのフレーズは、私の中に強く残り続けました。同時にそれは、私が長く制作の中心に据えてきた考えにも、直接的に重なっていたのです。
「すべてのものに魂が宿る」という考えは、一見すると神秘主義や超自然的な力、あるいは自然界のエネルギーを指し示しているように思えるかもしれません。しかし現在において、それはまったく別の意味合いを帯びています。2023年にAIの波が始まって以降、情報の境界はますます曖昧になってきました。私たちは常に問い続けています―これは現実なのか、それとも生成されたものなのか、と。データはサーバーやネットワークを通じて絶え間なく流れ続け、まるでアニミズムの時代が文字通り到来したかのように、あらゆるものがこちらを見ているかのようです。
アーティストとして、私はそこに新しい種類のエネルギーを感じています。何かが変わりつつあり、何か新しいものが生まれようとしている。そしてそれに伴ってアートも変化していくでしょう―私自身の作品も含めて。
ノマルでの展示は、私にとって常に実験の場であり、エネルギーを取り戻す場所でもありました。本展「Everything Has A Cute Face」で伝えたいのは、「見ること」と「見られること」のあいだにある緊張関係です。あなたを見返している存在は、オンライン上の誰かかもしれないし、AIかもしれない、あるいは別の次元からの何かかもしれない―もしくは、あなた自身なのかもしれません。確かなことはわかりません。ただ一つ言えるのは、あなたの視線と出会うあらゆるまなざしは、みな「かわいい顔」をしている、ということです。

CHANG Tengyuan, an internationally recognized artist with a distinctive worldview
“Cute” Faces Questioning Contemporary Perception and Society
The character “Parrot Man,” who appears in his work, is an alien investigating the remnants of human civilization on a future Earth after humanity’s extinction. Although these “parrots” can imitate human behavior, they cannot comprehend its emotions or meanings. Through their attempts to study present-day humans from a distant future, viewers are prompted to reconsider contemporary society from a detached, panoramic perspective.
Taiwanese artist CHANG Tengyuan has been gaining increasing international recognition through major solo exhibitions at public museums in Taiwan and participation in overseas exhibitions representing Taiwan. His practice continues to expand globally, marking him as an artist to watch.
In his previous exhibition at Nomart, Multiplication, Chang generated chaos through the phenomenon of “proliferation,” attracting significant attention. This exhibition marks his sixth solo presentation at the gallery and his first in three years.
A New Experiment with Nomart
The exhibition is titled Everything Has a Cute Face, a phrase that resonates with the idea—familiar in Japan—that “spirits dwell in all things.” While Chang has long expressed elements of Eastern philosophy through a pop aesthetic, this exhibition shifts its focus to a contemporary perceptual environment shaped by AI, where all information becomes bidirectional and the boundaries between self and others grow increasingly ambiguous. These themes are developed into a spatial installation comprising both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.
The focus lies in the shifting relationship between seeing and being seen. The “eyes” of Parrotman appear throughout the exhibition space, inviting visitors to physically experience this condition.
In this collaboration with Nomart, these “eyes” will be presented as a special edition print. Since their first exhibition in 2015, Nomart and Chang have continued an ongoing dialogue, producing experimental works together. We hope you will look forward to this new development.
On the opening day, a live performance will be held featuring kotsuzumi performer Shunichiro Hisada. The encounter between traditional performing arts and Chang’s artistic world promises a unique and dynamic exchange.

[Artist Statement]
Everything Has A Cute Face
The title came from something a foreign tourist said casually during one of my trips to Tokyo. Looking at the various mascots around the city, he laughed and said it — and the phrase stayed with me. It also turned out to speak directly to something I've long held at the center of my practice.
"Everything has a spirit" — the idea might seem to point toward mysticism, supernatural forces, or the energy of the natural world. But in the present moment, it maps onto something else entirely. Since the AI wave began in 2023, the boundaries of information have grown increasingly blurred. We find ourselves constantly asking: is this real, or is it generated? Data flows endlessly through servers and networks, as if the age of animism has quite literally arrived — as if everything is watching you.
As an artist, I feel a new kind of energy in this. Something is shifting, something new is about to emerge, and art will change along with it — my own work included.
Every exhibition at Nomart has been a space of experimentation for me, a place where I come away recharged. In Everything Has A Cute Face, what I want to convey is the tension between looking and being looked at. The one gazing back at you might be someone online, might be an AI, might be a presence from another dimension — or it might be yourself. I'm not sure. But what I do know is this: every gaze that meets yours has a cute face.
